Torresol Energy receives the CSP Today award in the category ‘CSP Dispatchability Solution’

Torresol Energy, a group specializing in the construction of highly efficient concentrated solar power plants, has received the CSP Today award for the “CSP Dispatchability Solution” category. This recognition focuses again on Torresol Energy’s innovative solution for high-temperature storage, which allows its plants to supply power to the grid depending on the demand and regardless of solar radiation. Thanks to this storage capacity, a renewable power source like solar energy becomes dispatchable. As a matter of fact, one of its plants, namely Gemasolar, is today the only solar thermal plant worldwide capable of producing energy round the clock exclusively by means of solar power. For example, in the summer of 2013, the plant achieved continuous production operating for 36 consecutive days, which is something that no other plant has performed to date.

Gemasolar plant Director, Gonzalo Azcárraga, collected the award on behalf of the company and dedicated it to all the people who make up Torresol Energy group, emphasizing that “their continued effort and daily good work make us feel increasingly proud of belonging to such a pioneering and exciting project as Torresol Energy, whose plants have become an example of innovation and sustainability around the world”.

This is not the first time that Torresol Energy’s solutions are awarded at international level: the group won in 2012 the CSP Today Sevilla award in the category of “CSP Dispatchability Solution”, while in 2011, it received the US CSP Today award (in the category of “Commercialized Technology Innovation USA”) as well as the European Seville CSP Today award (in the categories “Commercialized Technology Innovation” and “Most Effective Project Development”). In 2009, the group won the Seville CSP Today award in the category of “CSP innovation”.

The CSP Today international awards have been recognizing since 2009 the industry´s achievements. The winners of this edition have been selected by a jury composed by the most renowned people in the industry including Luis Crespo (President of ESTELA), Avi Brenmiller (CEO of Brenmiller Energy), Eduardo Zarza (Head of Solar Concentrating Systems at CIEMAT), Manuel Blanco (Solar Thermal Group Leader at CSIRO) and Manuel Silva (Professor at University of Sevilla), among others.

The award-giving ceremony took place at a gala dinner on the evening of November 12 in Seville in the framework of the CSP Today Sevilla 2013 summit that was held on November 12 and 13 in this regional capital city, where both Torresol Energy and SENER (which owns 60% of Torresol Energy) participated at the CSP Today Engineering event. In this regard, it is noteworthy that the most innovative technology used in Torresol Energy’s plants has been developed by SENER, which has also been responsible for leading the turnkey or EPC contract, the commissioning of the plants as well as the development of the basic and detailed engineering involved in the projects.
