Gemasolar wins the Premio al Fomento de la Investigación (Research Promotion Award) of the University of Almería
The University of Almería (UAL) has awarded, to GEMASOLAR 2006, S.A., the ‘Premio Consejo Social de la Universidad de Almería al Fomento de la Investigación Sociedad – Universidad’ [‘The Award of the Social Council of the University of Almería for the Promotion of Company – University Research’], in the ‘Honorary Award Category to Companies and Institutions for outstanding research activity conducted with the University of Almería’.
The awards, now into their seventh year, were announced last December during the plenary meeting of the Social Council of the UAL, and will be delivered at an act in 2010.
This is the second recognition received by the Gemasolar Plant in recent months, following the CSP Today award in the category of ‘Thermosolar Innovation’.
Gemasolar is the flagship project of the Torresol Energy company, a subsidiary that is 60%- and 40%-owned by SENER and Masdar, respectively. It is an innovative concentrated solar power plant located in the province of Seville which, once built, in 2011, will deliver clean and safe energy to 25,000 homes and will cut emissions of CO2 by more than 30,000 tonnes. Gemasolar is the first commercial-scale project built in the world with central tower technology and heliostat fields with the molten salt storage system, a compound that is also used as a heat transfer liquid. This novel technology has great development potential in the future, as has been endorsed by different banking organisations such as the European Investment Bank (EIB), Banesto, the Banco Popular and the Instituto de Crédito Oficial (ICO), which have granted it credits for the value of 171 million Euros.
More detailed information will be available on the Gemasolar Plant at the forthcoming edition of the World Future Energy Summit, a reference in the Middle East for the renewable energies sector, due to be held between January 18 and 21, 2010 in Abu Dhabi (United Arab Emirates), and with the attendance of HRH Don Felipe de Borbón. The Torresol Energy and SENER companies will be participating with a stand where they will be showcasing their main solar power projects.
