Gemasolar plant, candidate for the FIDIC Awards
The Gemasolar solar thermal plant, owned by Torresol Energy, is a candidate for the International Federation of Consulting Engineers (FIDIC) Awards that commemorate the organization centenary and which will go to the best engineering projects worldwide over the past 100 years. FIDIC has selected this facility for being “currently one of the best examples of Spanish engineering anywhere in the world“, according to the organization Tecniberia, the event’s co-organizer.
The innovative solar plant — the only one in the world capable of producing electricity round the clock — was built by the engineering and technology group SENER, which is the company shortlisted for this international award. In fact, SENER is one of three Spanish companies on the shortlist, which includes 44 candidates from around the world. SENER has also supplied all of the technology, and owns the 60% of Torresol Energy.
Gemasolar has aroused interest around the world thanks to its uniqueness and has received such prestigious recognition as the European Business Awards 2011.
The winners of the FIDIC Awards will be selected during a gala dinner to be held in Barcelona’s Palau Sant Jordi on Tuesday 17 September, during the FIDIC centenary conference which will be held in Barcelona from 16 to 18 September.
This event hopes to bring together 1,500 professionals from the fields of engineering, consulting and infrastructures from 100 countries, as well as clients and representatives from financial institutions, that will debate together on key issues for social development such as climate change, the development of sustainable infrastructures, energy efficiency, urbanization and access to water, as well as the best financial options for obtaining funding for development.
